ARE YOU A MAMA'S BOY?
It's time to ween yourself from the mother teat
PAGE 2
Typically, when a boy goes through adolescence, he begins to gravitate towards his father for guidance, slightly more than his mother. It’s during this time that he begins to grow into a man and exhibit more masculine characteristics.
However, some men never leave the influence of their mothers when they’re growing up. This could be because their fathers were abusive or emotionally unavailable. Sometimes we find that these fathers were themselves mama’s boys who were deeply under their mother’s influence and they never allowed themselves to step up in to their role as a father and provide the necessary influence over their sons to help them achieve an independent masculine adult status.
Ideally, it’s during these teenage years that a boy will break away from the relative safety of his mother’s influence and begin experiencing the more ‘dangerous’ life under his father’s influence. By ‘dangerous’, I’m referring to activities that teenage boys typically seek out naturally. This might include working with power tools, hunting or fishing, camping, sports, and so on. By living under his fathers influence, the boy gets to experience what life can be like as a man, often in the company of other men. This sets a powerful example and helps cement the boy’s strong desire for independence and manhood.

Let’s also put to rest a myth that all mamas’ boys are wimpy little men. Quite often they’re big, strong sorts of guys. So don’t think that just because you can bench press more than Arnold that you can’t be a mama’s boy. A mama’s boy is more about your psychological make-up as brought about by your relationship with your parents while growing up.
To help you evaluate your Mama’s boy factor, we’ve developed this handy little quiz. Answer ‘yes’ or ‘no’ to each question openly and honestly. Keep track of all of your ‘yes’ answers and refer to the explanation key following the quiz. Good luck.
