NICKELBACK SINGER CHARGED WITH DUI

I

noticed the lead singer for Nickelback was charged with drunk driving.  Here’s the blurb from AP.

SURREY, British Columbia (AP) -- Nickelback frontman Chad Kroeger was sentenced Thursday to a year without driving and fined $588 for a drunken driving conviction.

Kroeger, whose real name is Chad Turton, was stopped for speeding in his red Lamborghini in suburban Surrey, British Columbia, in June 2006.

Authorities said his blood alcohol level was nearly twice the legal limit.

His lawyer, Marvin Stern, noted the 33-year-old singer's charitable works and said the charges and trial have been an intrusion into Kroeger's life.

When are all of these musicians, sports starts, and actors going to get the clue?  Today’s drunk driving laws are so strict, and law enforcement is so pervasive that it’s not if you get stopped for a DUI it’s when.

Last week it was Richie Sambora of Bon Jovi.  The week before it was some football player.  The week before that it was Keifer Sutherland of 24.  Next week it will be some actress like Paris Hilton, Lindsey Lohan, Britney Spears, or Nicole Ritchie – o.k. they’ve already had their turn.  But of course, they don’t learn.  They keep getting ‘em.

It’s not that difficult.  You can easily protect yourself from getting a DUI.  Let me just give you one obvious thing to do after you’ve been drinking:  don’t speed.  Read the article above.  That’s exactly what led to his DUI.  It’s not rocket science.  When you know you’ve been drinking, don’t attract attention on the drive home.  Don’t speed, don’t roll through stop signs, signal, etc.  Don’t give the cops any reason to pull you over.

Check out our article How to Avoid a DUI and buy the book.  All of these people wish they knew the secret.  It’s too late for them, but not for you.

WINE SNOBS

I

’ve long suspected wine snobs were simply pompous metro-sexual posers.  One recent story confirmed my suspicions.  A study was conducted where people were told a wine was $10 and rated it.  They were told another wine was $90 and rated it.  Guess which one they rated higher?  That’s right.  They rated the $90 wine almost twice as high as the $10 wine.  But here’s the rub – it was the same wine.  The price was the major influence; not the color, the legs, the bouquet, the taste, but the price.  Here are the details:

Antonio Rangel, an associate professor of economics at Caltech, and his colleagues found that changes in the stated price of a sampled wine influenced not only how good volunteers thought it tasted, but the activity of a brain region that is involved in our experience of pleasure. In other words, "prices, by themselves, affect activity in an area of the brain that is thought to encode the experienced pleasantness of an experience," Rangel says.

Rangel and his colleagues had 20 volunteers taste five wine samples which, they were told, were identified by their different retail prices: $5, $10, $35, $45, and $90 per bottle. While the subjects tasted and evaluated the wines, their brains were scanned using functional magnetic resonance imaging, or fMRI.

The subjects consistently reported that they liked the taste of the $90 bottle better than the $5 one, and the $45 bottle better than the $35 one. Scans of their brains supported their subjective reports; a region of the brain called the medial orbitofrontal cortex, or mOFC, showed higher activity when the subjects drank the wines they said were more pleasurable.

There was a catch to the experiment, however. Although the subjects had been told that they would taste five different, variously priced wines, they actually had sampled only three. Wines 1 and 2 were used twice, but labeled with two different prices. For example, wine 2 was presented as the $90 wine (its actual retail price) and also as the $10 wine. When the subjects were told the wine cost $90 a bottle, they loved it; at $10 a bottle, not so much. In a follow-up experiment, the subjects again tasted all five wine samples, but without any price information; this time, they rated the cheapest wine as their most preferred.

So forget the so-called experts.  They can’t taste their way out of a paper bag.  Go with whatever you like.

THE FIRST BEER

I

grew up on a fruit ranch run by my grandfather.  My grandfather was a huge beer drinker, as were my uncles.  There was always beer around.  We had easy access to it.  It was cheap beer.  If you’re over 30. you might remember it:  Hams, Olympia, Schlitz.

I must have been around 8 or 10 the first time a tried it.  While I can’t remember the exact time and place, I can still remember vividly the cold bitter taste on those hot summer days, and how it quenched my thirst.  I wouldn’t drink a whole beer; just took a few guzzles, but it was enough to produce a mild buzz.  Ah, the first buzz.

I didn’t turn in to an alcoholic or alcohol abuser.  But I did develop a love for beer that stays with me to this day.  I wouldn’t recommend it for everyone, but I have no regrets of having a taste at such an early age.

If you have an interesting story of your first beer, drop me an email.
