he World Series of Poker people finally may have gotten it right – at least partly right. Starting in 2008, they are going to set the final table on or about July 15. But they aren’t going to play the final table until November 9th. The reason? By having it on November 9th, anticipation builds and marketing generates more hype and interest, which results in higher rating for an almost live broadcast of the final table. That’s right. Instead of hearing the news on the radio or internet months before you can watch it on TV, they are going to let you see it happen live. It’s a smart move. It can only increase the amount of interest in an already skyrocketing industry.

The Allure of the Slots

rarely played slot machines before I met my wife. Blackjack and craps were more my cup of tea. But after watching my wife win a lot of jackpots on the slots, I started dumping my share of coin into those money pits. After all, slot machines had a certain sexiness that I couldn’t get at a table game; namely a large jackpot. Sure I could plunk my bankroll down on a single hand of blackjack and get a quick thrill, but that’s not how I played the game. I grinded away at the tables, counting cards and trying to get a small steady return on my money.
That’s the other allure of the slots. It’s not as monotonous. Each spin offered a chance at a jackpot, and I didn’t have to concentrate on the count. Blackjack can get pretty dull after sitting at the table grinding away for hour after hour. But slots offered an immediate rush. You have the chance to hit thousands of dollars in a single spin. You also get mini pays along the way.
But of course the rush only lasts for so long. You soon realize what you knew all along: the odds on slot are the worst in the casino. You chances of winning are slim to none, and slim just left town on his horse. Even if you do win, your chances of putting it all back in, either this trip or the next, are almost certain.
So go ahead and dump a few bucks in the slots just to break up the monotony, but spend your time at the games with the best odds. Even if they grow dull, you’ll still have more of your money at the end of the night.
