Corporal Angelo Vaccaro - Soldier Overcomes Drugs and Bad Influeces to Become Silver Star Recipient

Army Medic First Soldier To Receive Two Silver Stars In The War On Terror

 

WASHINGTON - Angelo Vaccaro grew up in the Bronx. He followed in the footsteps of many in his neighborhood at that time: drug use, brushes with the law, and a life going nowhere fast. One day, he made the decision that turned his life around: He joined the army. In his new life as an Army medic, his purpose turned from focusing on himself to focusing on others.

 

A firefight erupted around Vaccaro’s unit on Oct. 3, 2004. Plunging headlong into the engagement, the medic was killed while attempting to evacuate his wounded comrades. He is the first servicemember to earn two Silver Star Medals in the global terror war.

“In an effort to save his soldiers -- in doing what was right in life -- he courageously faced his death,” Navy Admiral Mike Mullen said. “And we honor him as we have so many tonight, and the legions of combat medics who came before him and the many who will surely follow.”
