Navy Seal Falls on Grenade, Saves the Lives of Comrades
Michael Monsoor joined the Navy before the September 11th attacks. He graduated from Navy Seal training in 2004 and went to Iraq in 2006.
Monsoor was a commnicator and machine gunner. He took the lead position on his team, protecting them from frontal assault. Over the first five months of his team's deployment, they killed at least 84 terrorists.
During a fierce attack in 2006, Monsoor ventured out into enemy fire in order to rescue an injured soldier. He was awarded the Silver Star.
Later in 2006, Monsoor and his team engaged four terrorists in a firefight. They killed one and injured another. Anticpating further attacks, his team took up rooftop positions. The local civilians aided the terrorists by blocking off the streets. A local Mosque broadcast a message to its followers to fight the Americans. Shortly thereafter, a terrorist threw a grenade onto the rooftop from the street below. It hit Monsoor in the chest. Reacting immediately, Monsoor fell onto the grenade with his body. The blast critically wounded him and he died 30 minutes later. Two of his three comrades on the rooftop were injured but survived. They all credited Monsoor with saving their lives.
Monsoor was awared the Medal of Honor for his bravery.
