Seargent First Class Paul R. Smith lost his life while protecting those around him from a surprise attack. His action ultimately led to enemy defeat. Here's how he did it.
He was helping construct an enemy POW camp when his task force was attacked by a large group of militants. He quickly organized a defense. He personally fought off the enemy with hand grenades and anti-tank weapons. When he thought the enemy was about to overrun the defenses, Smith ventured into enemy fire to man a .50 caliber machine gun. This action helped lead his soldiers to victory over the enemy which lost about 50 men. Unfortunately, Smith lost his life while engaging the enemy. His men will never forget, and either will we Seargent First Class Paul R. Smith.
